New beginnings are always hard but they are worth it no matter of age!

Portugal is a beautiful country. At the foot of the hills sloping towards the ocean, the best wines mature, the people are nice and very close to the Czech mentality. Do not expect big gestures or explosions of extroversion. They are nothing like the Italians but if they say something it’s simply true. However, the country is still struggling with high unemployment and, above all, with five percent illiteracy.

Our PELICAN team attended a reading and writing course as a part of the European project Live2work workshop. Seeing a group of about fifty years old people of different nationalities and beliefs struggling with letters from the spelling-book (courses are quite similar to the lessons of Czech language in first class at primary school) is a magical experience. An old man with a wrinkled forehead is circulating the letters in a book, a lady sitting next to him is squinting her eyes trying to understand the meaning of the text written on a board. With the supreme concentration they are trying to gain the knowledge that their fellow citizens have already had since their first grade of primary school. In spite of that there is no shame, you can see only pride. They are proud to be able to overcome the obstacles that life has imposed to them. Education means a way out of a poverty for them and also an opportunity of having a better life not just for them but for their children as well.

There are several messages me and my colleague from PELICAN have brought from this workshop. We can always move on, start over again or do something. No matter our age or he gifts we were born with, we can still start again. More important is a desire to evolve, confront adversity and change our destiny, like the fifty years olds trying to read and write.

The Live2Work project is designed for people with a basic education who have a desire to improve their life position when faced with inability to succeed on the job market. PELICAN, the Czech partner of this project, is preparing a series of autumn workshops for teachers working with these people to present the tools and methods of the „life project“. With its help unemployed people can restart not just their professional life but also the personal one.

Are you a lecturer, instructor or adviser, and are you wondering how to help these people? Visit www.live2work.eu or www.skolapelican.com for more information about the project and workshops. Would you like to join our workshops that are free of chargé? Please write to us at vadura@skolapelican.co m or call 775 092 296. You can find PELICAN at Lidicka 9. Do not hesistate to contact us!
